Calcite

Specimen # 100274
Mineral: Calcite
Location: Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province, China
Size: 6.8 x 5.3 x 5.3 cm

Description

Beautiful, sharp, stacked calcite crystals with excellent lustre from Chenzhou. The key feature of these calcites is that they are in fact comprised of two generations of calcite – there is an internal core of a single white scalenohedral crystal, and it is overgrown by flattened calcite crystals. The flattened crystals have highly lustrous small prism faces. Looking down from the termination, there is a three-way pattern of oriented included pyrite (the person from whom I bought them said “Mercedes Benz, Mercedes Benz!”). This is visible in the third photo. This specimen is distinctive for its two-tiered look and the outline of the white core crystal (visible through the other crystals) is prominent under good light. In excellent condition for the find – a couple of minor chips and a thin cleave on a crystal underside are not at all distracting from the display angle (the light spots in the photos are external and internal reflections). Cool calcite with real character.
