Azurite

Specimen # 100558
Mineral: Azurite
Location: Azurite, Kibwi, Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo
Size: 3.7 x 3.3 x 1.8 cm

Description

Detailed Description

A unique specimen, this one is comprised of clusters of beautiful blue azurite crystals, bisected by a seam of crystallized  green malachite. The azurite ranges from deep blue to a rather electric colour of blue, with sharp, lustrous crystals. With magnification, you can see small radiating malachite crystals comprising part of the malachite seam. Iin excellent condition – minor chipping in spots, not distracting.  A great, totally distincitve piece!

About These Azurites

Although the copper deposits of the Democratic Republic of Congo have been famous for a long time, excellent crystallized azurite specimens are uncommon from the DRC (and have often been quite expensive). This lot is from a new find at Kibwi, located approximately 70 km northeast of Lubumbashi on the road to Likasi in Katanga.
