Aegirine, Quartz

Specimen # 100817
Mineral: Aegirine, Quartz
Location: Quartz, Mount Malosa, Zomba District, Malawi
Size: 6.5 x 3.6 x 2.3 cm

Description

This piece features two sharp, lustrous, intergrown aegirine crystals with a sweet quartz crystal. The terminations at the top and right are complete. In excellent condition, but I confess I can’t figure out exactly what is happening with this specimen – it’s very cool but a bit hard to figure out. The crystals have a dark, lustrous, outer surface, typical of the best Mount Malosa aegirines. but the crystals on this piece have lighter green cores – it’s as if the dark outer crystal surface is a veneer. You can see a hollow that shows this perfectly. The green interior looks to me to have an amphibole appearance. The termination at lower left is not damaged, it’s just incomplete by virtue of this hollowing. A nice specimen with additional interest!
