Specimen # 101936
Mineral: Aegirine, Zircon, Microcline
Location: Aegirine, Zircon, Microcline, Mount Malosa, Zomba District, Malawi
Size: 8.3 x 6.9 x 5.1 cm

Description

This piece is centred on a large, impressive aegirine crystal (7.5 x 4 x 3.5 cm), which hosts crystals of zircon, microcline and smaller aegirine crystals as well. The large aegirine is sharp, with a somewhat complex form, lustrous prism faces and a matte termination. The zircon crystals are a light brown and under shortwave ultraviolet light they fluoresce yellow, while microcline crystals fluoresce deep pink-red. In excellent condition – no damage to the main aegirine or the zircons or microclines, a couple of incomplete small aegirines (and some incomplete aegirine at the bottom and at back left where this was attached to adjoining rock, behind the main crystal and out of view as displayed).

A great combination specimen, with an excellent large aegirine as the centrepiece.
