Alabandite

Specimen # 102140
Mineral: Alabandite
Location: Alabandite, Merelani Hills, Lelatima Mountains, Manyara, Tanzania
Size: 7.0 x 6.8 x 4.8 cm

Description

This is a world-class alabandite crystal. It is huge for this species, and for its size it is both a well-developed crystal and also is free of the distortion that is often seen with crystals from this find. The crystal is complete, with no point of attachment, and has many sharp, well developed faces. As with most of the crystals from this find, some crystal face development was interrupted, and some areas exhibit etching. The crystal faces are a dark metallic grey-black, with some blue metallic patina. In exceptional condition. Stands perfectly for display as photographed. Out of interest, associated minerals include minor graphite and, at the back, a couple of fragments of zoisite var. tanzanite.

A killer alabandite.
