Andradite

Specimen # 101464
Mineral: Andradite
Location: Marki Khel, Spin Ghar Range, Khogyani District, Nangharhar, Afghanistan
Size: 3.7 x 3.0 x 2.5 cm

Description

This piece features superb andradite crystals – the largest is 2.8 cm. These crystals are sharp with a brilliant lustre and are associated with small epidote and clinochlore crystals. In excellent condition. The large crystal has a small irregularity at the back corner (displayed away from view) – it is fully crystallized, and seems to be partly a contact, while it also looks to me to have a bit of titanite there as well. A gorgeous andradite.

About these Andradites

These andradites come from a mountainous border region of Afghanistan near Pakistan. It is an area that has been quite dangerous and sometimes inaccessible in recent times. The first specimens from the Spin Ghar range became known in the late 1980s and sporadic finds have been made since then.
