Arfvedsonite, Microcline

Specimen # 100816
Mineral: Arfvedsonite, Microcline
Location: Arfvedsonite, Microcline, Mount Malosa, Zomba District, Malawi
Size: 5.3 x 3.7 x 2.6 cm

Description

Sharp black arfvedsonite crystals to 2.0 cm on microcline feldspar. The arfvedsonite crystals have bright, lustrous prism faces with fine striations. This piece is in very good condition – there is no damage in the way of chipping, but there is a crack in the crystal, visible in the photos. It’s not clear whether this crack dates to the time of formation or whether it is recent – it is clean and angular in appearance (of course, due to perfect cleavage of arfvedsonite) and so it’s not distracting in the way that breakage and chipping is. I was able to discuss this with the seller so I could offer it here at a good price. (The specimen is sturdy.) This is a clean, sharp arfvedsonite with nice contrast with the microcline and none of the usual chips and cleaves.
