Atacamite

Specimen # 101377
Mineral: Atacamite
Location: Lily Mine, Pisco Umay, Ica Dept., Peru
Size: 9.0 x 7.8 x 7.3 cm

Description

Gorgeous rich green transparent atacamite crystals stand up in a chrysocolla-lined vug. These atacamite crystals are superb – lustrous, terminated, freestanding prisms, and what stands out most is the colour when lit. Most often, atacamite crystals lie flat against a matrix and/or are very dark, such that light does not convey the colour as well. But these crystals just glow an intense green under the lights. Great contrast with the associated chrysocolla, and down near the base of the vug, the chyrsocolla is coating calcite crystals. From the first photo, it’s a bit hard to make out how three-dimensional this vug is, so I shot the second photo with no reflectors and allowing deep shadows to better convey the shape of the overall piece. In excellent condition, no damage. This is a beautiful atacamite specimen.
