Barite

Specimen # 100026
Mineral: Barite
Location: Linwood Mine, Buffalo, Scott Co., Iowa, USA
Size: 6.4 x 5.1 x 3.7 cm

Description

The crystals on this specimen are slightly smoky-coloured, clear and glassy, with some frosting and satiny finish on the back side. The largest crystal measures 3.9 x 2.0 x 1.3 cm. These crystals show additional crystal forms not evident on many of the specimens from the find – really nice!

The crystals are perfectly undamaged (great terminations). In the photographs you can see that the crystal development was arrested in certain places where there was interaction with the limestone. The third photo I tried to reduce all reflections so you can see this closely.  There is actually a faint phantom in the vertical crystal. This is a good small cabinet specimen – the crystal forms make the piece.
