Barite

Specimen # 100027
Mineral: Barite
Location: Linwood Mine, Buffalo, Scott Co., Iowa, USA
Size: 8.8 x 3.9 x 3.2 cm

Description

Very bright glassy faces on this barite crystal, and in particular the termination faces are sharp and just great. Beautiful and gemmy in the upper third of the crystal, very clear in places. Under a good light there are frosty phantoms evident in the crystal. In perfect condition damage-wise from the viewing side, there are a couple spots of rubbing and minor chips at back. There are internal fractures evident in the photographs and a couple of wispy inclusions – they give a good play of light.  I’ve included several photos to try to give a sense of lustre and internal light play – the last two have some light reflected in from above-right and behind.

This is a really nice (good-sized!) smoky coloured barite crystal!
