Calcite

Specimen # 101876
Mineral: Calcite
Location: Calcite, Verchniy Mine, Dal'negorsk, Primorskiy Kray, Russia
Size: 9.0 x 7.9 x 4.8 cm

Description

This is a beautiful and striking large-cabinet display specimen of calcite. It is a stack of scalenohedral crystals, in which the large one at the bottom and the very-3D-one at the top are both contact twins, with beautiful re-entrant faces. The crystals in between them are not so obviously twinned, although from the backside one can see that the second from the top is also a twin. The crystals are sharp, essentially colourless-to-white, but with a very faint pink hue. The lustre is bright and glassy, not so easily captured in the photos, but hopefully by looking at the photos taken from different angles you can see this. In excellent condition particularly for such a piece at such a size, almost no damage at all – one nick at the left termination of the top crystal and one small cleave behind the left side midway down – neither is visible from the front display angle (first photo). Ths Verchniy Mine closed years ago, and this piece is from a Russian collection.

Great, distinctive specimen!
