Calcite

Specimen # 101293
Mineral: Calcite
Location: Calcite, Yushnoe Mine, Dal'negorsk, Primorskiy Kray, Russia
Size: 9.2 x 6.3 x 2.5 cm

Description

Detailed Description

This plate is covered with lustrous transparent calcite crystals over an original generation of brownish calcite of a different crystal morphology. The highlight and focal point of the piece is the beautiful 1.3 cm twinned crystal at the top, centre – it is a transparent gem. (This piece looks best displayed with support to stand as photographed so that this crystal catches the light.) In very good condition overall – there are incomplete/chipped crystals in spots on the plate, but the main crystal is in excellent condition. A super twinned calcite!

About these Yushnoe Mine Calcites

The Yushnoe Mine is a newer mine and to date has produced virtually no fine mineral specimens. In 2015, a pocket of calcite crystals contained some beautiful twins. This was not a large or prolific find at all, and almost all specimens had some damage. They show excellent twinning, with the same form as the now-classic twinned yellow calcites from the Sokolovskoe Mine, Rudniy, Kazakhstan.
