Cinnabar

Specimen # 100603
Mineral: Cinnabar
Location: Tongren, Ghizou Province, China
Size: 7.6 x 6.2 x 2.7 cm

Description

A beautiful 1.6 cm group of deep red twinned cinnabar crystals, nestled in a vug with quartz and dolomite crystals. The crystal group is actually comprised of two intergrown cinnabar crystals, each of which is a penetration twin. The cinnabar crystals are razor sharp and highly lustrous. The large cinnabar is pristine. The smaller one is also pristine, save for two tiny chips you need magnification to make out. This is an exceptional quality specimen for cinnabar (which is so soft and almost always has nicking and rubbing). Although the vug is quite a shallow recess (and the cinnabar crystals are therefore easy to view), it is nonetheless enough of a recess to protect them. The back of this piece has been trimmed with a saw cut (no saw cut is visible/evident from the display angle) and the piece stands perfectly for display. a wonderful top-quality cinnabar.
