Datolite

Specimen # 200118
Mineral: Datolite
Location: Datolite, Bor Pit, Dal'negorsk, Primorskiy Kray, Russia
Size: 5.3 x 3.9 x 2.6 cm

Description

From perhaps the most famous and prolific locality for datolite crystals, this crystal is quite different – it is a textbook monoclinic prism perched on top of quartz crystals, isolated and fully formed. Most datolite crystals tend to occur as aggregates, in groups and many datolite crystals exhibit various kinds of growth-interference. This piece is special because there is no growth interference as displayed (only on the back, cental on the crystal, not visible as displayed), and the crystal is on its own on this quartz pedestal. The datolite is in excellent condition, no damage (there are complex growth features at points, but they are fully terminated and not damage). The crystal is essentially colourless with the faintest hint of green and it is transucent to transparent. There is a selective zoned dusting of micro datolite crytals on the termination faces. A particularly fine datolite from Dal’negorsk.
