Elbaite Tourmaline

Specimen # 200712
Mineral: Elbaite Tourmaline
Location: Himalaya Mine, Mesa Grande Mining District, San Diego Co., California, USA
Size: 5.0 x 2.4 x 1.4 cm

Description

A superb doubly-terminated crystal of elbaite, variety rubellite, from the classic Himalaya Mine. This crystal is sensational – on matrix, complete 360 degrees – pristine. It is a classic illustration of hemimorphic crystal growth, where the crystal forms of each termination are different – very shallow at the top, and pyramidal at the bottom. This tourmaline is sharp, and highly lustrous all-around. There is a beautiful internal play of light, and subtle colour zoning within, with a very thin light green cap. In excellent condition, no damage (light spots in the photos are internal reflections of the studio flashes.) From the Gerald Panneton collection. This is an absolutely wonderful California tourmaline – a killer!
