Epidote

Specimen # 100247
Mineral: Epidote
Location: Rosario Mabel Claim, Pampa Blanca, Castrovirreyna Province, Huancavelica Dept., Peru
Size: 4.3 x 2.8 x 2.0 cm

Description

This group of epidote crystals is a little different, for a Pampa Blanca epidote. Typically, the epidotes from here show a more delicate, fan-like crystallization habit – this one is unusually blocky, and it is twinned. The crystals are nearly parallel growth, but are slightly divergent. The specimen is lustrous, and the terminations are particularly bright. There is no damage from any of the main viewing angles (it is incomplete across the bottom, where it was attached to the rock, and a couple chips lower on the back side). Although it is quite internally dark in person, the crystals are not opaque – under bright light there is a little internal colour visible. The most engaging aspects of this specimen are the twinning and the myriad of termination faces that flash in the light at the right angle. Nice piece.
