Gypsum var. Selenite on Halite

Specimen # 100974
Mineral: Gypsum var. Selenite on Halite
Location: Salinas de Otuma, Paracas, Pisco, Pisco Province, Ica Dept., Peru
Size: 6.7 x 6.5 x 3.8 cm

Description

This one is distinctive! A 3.2 cm ball of beautiful golden-yellow selenite crystals is perched at the top of a plate of halite matrix. The selenite crystals are sharp and lustrous. To the right of the crystal ball there is a 2.1 cm twinned selenite crystal. In superb condition for a selenite from this locality (in part because I bought it in Peru and was able to ensure safe transportation) – no damage with the naked eye and one minor nick on the ball visible with magnification. Gorgeous!

Please note: halite specimens do not do well in humid conditions, so if you live in a humid place without sustained air conditioning, the halite on this specimen will begin to deliquesce over time and this piece may not be for you. It is totally fine in dry or air-conditioned space up to approximately 70% relative humidity. It has been in Southern Ontario (often very humid) in normal conditioned space for three years with no visible changes whatsoever.
