Hematite

Specimen # 102436
Mineral: Hematite
Location: Coluna Mine, Miguel Burnier District, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Size: 5.6 x 3.1 x 2.3 cm

Description

A beautiful hematite “iron rose”. The hematite crystals are highly lustrous, with surfaces like black mirrors, while the edges have a reddish metallic look.  In excellent condition, no damage (which is rare for Ouro Preto hematites). Crystallized all around – the first photo is the front, the second is the back. The hematite crystals grew on a base of pyrophyllite, and the bottom edge of this specimen is the edge that was against the pyrophyllite (there is still some visible in the underside of this piece). An extremely nice top-quality hematite specimen.
