Ilvaite

Specimen # 100599
Mineral: Ilvaite
Location: Huanggang Mines, Hexigten Banner, Ulanhad, Inner Mongolia A.R., China
Size: 4.4 x 4.2 x 3.2 cm

Description

Detailed Description

A group of great lustrous parallel-growth ilvaite crystals. Singly terminated, with brilliant lustre at the terminations. The small angled crystal at the side is roughly crystallized at the termination, looks like perhaps it formed up against something as it grew (but this faces back from the viewing angle, so you don’t see it anyway). In excellent condition – no damage other than a missing tip from a small side crystal and a couple of incomplete grey quartz crystals down near the bottom of the piece. Great specimen!

About These Ilvaites

Although the finds at Huanggang have clearly produced ilvaite specimens of a calibre and in numbers previously unknown for the mineral, many Huanggang ilvaites are quite chipped or more severely damaged – these ones are excellent. Over the course of the ilvaite finds, some characteristics of the crystals have varied quite substantially. In particular, some are much sharper than others, and some are much brighter than others.
