Specimen # 101945
Mineral: Microcline (Carlsbad Twin), Arfvedsonite
Location: Arfvedsonite on Microcline, Mount Malosa, Zomba District, Malawi
Size: 5.4 x 5.0 x 4.1 cm

Description

This specimen features a central microcline crystal exhibiting Carlsbad twinning, surrounded by lustrous arfvedsonite crystals and smaller microcline crystals, some of which are also twinned. The microcline to the immediate left of the main Carlsbad twin is a Manebach twin. The arfvedsonite crystals are sharp, with striations and are terminated. In excellent condition overall, some of the arfvedsonites are incomplete.

The microcline fluoresces a deep pink-red in shortwave ultraviolet light (fourth photo).

An unusual piece, exhibiting the two twinning habits, and accompanied by contrasting arfvedsonite.
