Muscovite, var. Fuchsite

Specimen # 102713
Mineral: Muscovite, var. Fuchsite
Location: Junco, Malacachetta, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Size: 4.9 x 4.2 x 3.5 cm

Description

Detailed Description

This specimen features densely packed rosettes and books of fuchsite crystals from the 2009 find. The colour at a distance is a dark green, but under good light and backlighting, these crystals are a brilliant chrome green. In excellent condition for the find, with a few rubs and abrasions. I acquired this piece directly from Frank and Wendy Melanson in 2009, from the group of specimens Frank brought back, and it has been in my own collection ever since. This is a great specimen of this rarity!

About these Muscovite, var. Fuchsite, Specimens

Although muscovite crystals are common, freestanding crystals of the chromian green variety, fuchsite, are rare.  Similarly, fuchsite itself occurs not uncommonly, but as foliated masses, only rarely as individual crystals and crystal groups. In 2009, a prospector hit this small find of fuchsite crystals in the Junco District, in Minas Gerais. There were not many specimens and most of those were heavily abraded (mica being so soft), so there were very few truly fine pieces from this find.
