Mineral: Quartz, Fluorite
Location: Shangbao Mine, Leiyang Co., Hunan, China
Size: 9.7 x 9.4 x 6.5 cm

Description

Detailed Description

A great specimen of quartz from the John S. White quartz collection, exhibiting “candle quartz” and “artichoke quartz” habits, where a multitude of smaller crystals have grown over larger ones. The terminations of the two thicker crystals (at right in the first photo) are particularly sharp and intricate. In excellent condition. The back of the specimen hosts a thin, flat aggregate of light purple fluorite crystals. A dramatic display piece.

About the Shangbao Mine

The Shangbao Mine, which is nestled in a bamboo forest, was originally a small pyrite ore operation. However, commercial mining operations ended decades ago and for many years has been operated for specimens. Today the Shangbao Mine is widely regarded as one of China’s great mineral localities.
