Rutilated Quartz

Specimen # 100526
Mineral: Rutilated Quartz
Location: Rutilated Quartz, Novo Horizonte, Bahia, Brazil
Size: 8.2 x 4.8 x 4.0 cm

Description

Beautiful smoky quartz with rutile crystals up to 4 cm running throughout. The quartz crystal is entirely natural – no polishing – and is lustrous and transparent.  In excellent condition – the top termination and crystal edges are all damage-free (micro-chipping visible with magnification on a couple of edges, but no issue), and the bottom tip of the quartz crystal is chipped. Some interesting development interrupted the quartz crystal growth around the back but this is not damage. The rutile crystals are gorgeous golden needles, in slender slightly radiating sprays.

Typically at Novo Horizonte the rutile is epitactic on hematite, radiating out from hematite crystal centres. On this specimen, this is evident but the hematite crystals are very small and not easily seen. One of the rutile arrangements inside the quartz crystal (fifth photo) shows the habit of the famous radiating rutile stars (with hematite crystal centre) from this locality, but there are so many other rutile crystals around it that you have to look to see it, and you can barely make out the hematite for all the rutile.

This is a beautiful specimen – the golden rutile just glows and sparkles under the lights.
