Rutile, Hematite in Quartz

Specimen # 200053
Mineral: Rutile, Hematite in Quartz
Location: Rutile and Hematite in Quartz, Novo Horizonte, Bahia, Brazil
Size: 6.1 x 3.5 x 1.8 cm

Description

This polished crystal of smoky quartz contains a small world of rutile crystals on hematite crystals. The rutile crystals are epitactically oriented on the hematite crystals such that they form stars. Of course unlike rutile-hematite combinations from this famous locality that are free-standing, these are perfectly protected inside the quartz, every detail pristine. The polish is niclely done on this one, and the hematite-rutile landscape in side is awesome.

I note that in the first and third photos, certain hematite/rutile inclusions are seen through two faces of the polished quartz, so if you think you’e seeing double, it’s the optics at work…
