Spessartine Garnet

Specimen # 100561
Mineral: Spessartine Garnet
Location: Apaligun, Braldu Valley, Baltistan, N.A., Pakistan
Size: 10.2 x 8.9 x 4.1 cm

Description

This handsome cabinet specimen features two beautiful deep red spessartine garnet crystals on contrasting pale cream-coloured albite crystals. It was brought out of Pakistan by well-known Pakistan mineral expert Dudley Blauwet. The spessartines are quite something – they are razor-sharp, glassy, and the larger one measures 2.0 cm. The colour inside the spessartine crystals varies from a pure dark red to a slightly warmer tone. With good lighting there is nice internal sparkle, as with the best of the Pakistan spessartines. In excellent condition – the spessartines are pristine save for one small chip on the larger one that is not easily noticed without magnification. You can see that the spessartines show some minor fracturing that seems to have occurred in the past. Fracturing and re-healing is evident among the albite crystals forming the matrix. This is a wonderful piece – the sharpness of those high quality red crystals on the light background really jumps out.
