Vesuvianite

Specimen # 101457
Mineral: Vesuvianite
Location: Vesuvianite, Sandaré, Cercle de Nioro, Kayes Region, Mali
Size: 2.6 x 2.6 x 2.1 cm

Description

This is a sharp vesuvianite crystal with glassy lustre, a textbook tetragonal crystal. Some glistening translucence beneath the crystal surfaces. Nice rich brown colour, particularly in the termination.

The crystal has the small beginnings of a bottom termination, before that is interrupted by a contact on the bottom (there is a contact on one side I’d orient at the back out of view). In excellent condition, with minor edge chipping, but I note that many of the small light spots in the photos are actually either small micro-crystalline pale inclusions or surface growths, not edge wear or damage.

A fine specimen from a locality that has produced a relatively small number of vesuvianites of this sharpness and quality.
