Howlite

Specimen # 101181
Mineral: Howlite
Location: Howlite, Bras D'Or Lake, Iona, Victoria Co., Nova Scotia, Canada
Size: 4.9 x 4.6 x 2.1 cm

Description

Detailed Description

This is a 2.7 cm cluster of howlite crystals, wth individual crystals up to 1.1 cm. Both the cluster size and crystal size rank among the largest found to date. Most of the howlite crystals are in excellent condition, with a small number of slightly frosted crystal tips (due to interaction with the seawater) and missing crystals in the centre. A remarkable specimen for the species.

About These Howlites

The howlite crystals from Bras D’Or Lake, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia are the best known – to date, this is the world’s only locality to produce howlite crystals, other than a California locality with microscopic ones.

This place can be a little rough… which is a very good thing in some ways, and less so in others!
